Known for her figure … Read more A hauntingly, beautiful painting of a young child attributed to Harriet Blackstone (NY, 1864-1939), oil/paperboard, framed. Known for her figure and portrait paintings, Blackstone started her professional life as a book editor and teacher of drama and elocution. In 1903 she began her studies at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where one of her teachers was William Merritt Chase. Afterwards she went to Paris to study at the Académie Julien, where she worked with painter Jean-Paul Laurens and exhibited in the 1907 Paris Salon. She was a member of several artists' organizations, including the National Arts Club, Chicago Society of Artists, Arts Club of Chicago, American Women's Art Association, and the International Society of Arts & Letters. Her work can be found in the collections of the De Young Memorial Museum, the Brooklyn Museum and the Smithsonian, among many others. See less
