Arflex was founded in 1947, by a group of three Pirelli technicians under the guidance of architect Marco Zanuso to create a new company projected into the future. They started using new experimental materials for the furniture industry, materials coming from other sectors, the automobile sector, and materials that were easy to shape and adapt to modern living. One of these materials was indeed form rubber combined with elastic tape which would replace metal springs and guarantee major flexibility and comfort on armchairs and sofas. They chose the right time, the 1960s was a revolutionary period for furniture manufacturing imprinted on modern design and new technologies where the companies were eager to industrialize production and move to more workable materials such as polyester, resins, and fiberglass. It was the same time Cassina and B&B Italia were also collaborating with young architects and experimenting with new prototypes which later became iconic products revisited and re-editioned for years to come. The company won several design awards. Major designers who collaborated with the company were Mario Marenco, Cini Boeri, Marco Zanuso, Franco Albini, and many others. Arflex designs are in some of the major permanent collections museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Some of the major creations which are still today in productions are the Lady and Fiorenza Lounge Chairs, the Strips Sofa, the Marenco Sofa, and many more. less
