A whimsical pair of authentic antique Qing dynasty (1636–1912) Chinese Sancai glazed ceramic roof tile figures with rich beautifully aged weathered patina!
Dating to the 19th century, Northern China, wonderfully hand-crafted, unusual sculptural form depicting highly stylized auspicious fish in rich Sancai green and yellow glaze, rising on terracotta clay arched imbrex barrel roof tile, these remarkable architectural salvaged building ornaments originally adorned the roof of an important Chinese building, now they make for highly decorative and fascinating sculptures!

History:
The Fish, 鱼 (yú) figure is believed to be a symbol of good fortune and longevity.
The Fish is one of the several natural or mythical creatures such as Foo Dogs - Guardian Lions that adorn roof edges of Chinese religious temples, official buildings and important structures. Brightly hand painted and glazed ceramic roof tiles of these natural or mythical creatures are often lined up several in a row atop Chinese roofs as decorative architectural elements, also known as roof charms or roof beasts, they are traditionally believed to be protective against bad energy, while attracting positive energy, good fortune and longevity.
Condition:
Great original antique condition with beautifully aged heavily weathered patina over the whole. Retaining original antique character and charm throughout, wear consistent with age, use and exposure, including desirable crazing - craquelure throughout that can only be acquired over long periods of time. Significant buildup. We have not cleaned them, leaving them as original, and retaining as much character as possible. If you would like them cleaned and polished please let us know after ordering them. less
