Theo Tobiasse was born in 1927 in Jaffa, Israel. Due to financial problems, his Lithuanian parents moved back to Lithuania, where Tobiasse grew up until he was 4 years old. In 1931, the family moved to Paris, where the father found work in a typographic workshop. Due to the Jewish pogrom, he had to attend a private course in advertising design on Boulevard Saint-Michel to further his education. After the liberation of Paris, he began a career as an advertising graphic designer. After obtaining French citizenship in 1950, he moved to Nice. from 1960 he turned to self-taught painting. Figurative motifs without narrative or symbolism form the content of his first gouaches until 1964, when his iconography becomes more personal and he thematically confronts his own experiences and those of the Jewish people. Since 1961 the artist's works have been shown in Switzerland, France, England, Canada, Japan, Sweden, the United States, Norway, Israel and Mexico, purchased by collectors, museums and public collections.
