Villon, one of three brothers, (one of them the famous Marcel Duchamp), worked early on in the style of Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Villon also studied printmaking techniques with Marcel Robbe. Later on he worked in various modernist styles including Fauvism, Cubism, and abstract impressionism. In 1913 he exhibited at the landmark Armory Show in New York, thereby launching his career, especially in America. A painting exceeded the one million dollar mark at a New York auction in 2004, but original works commonly exceed $100,000. Villon's place in twentieth century art history is assured. This example measures 4 1/4" by 6 3/4" (image) and 11" by 15" (sheet). There are some light handling creases in the margin area and a few rusty brown small spots, also in the margin, above and to right of image, as well as two small depressions, again, in the margins. This is an affordable example by a major modernist artist. See less
