Often referred to as roundabout chairs, they were extremely desirable in the 18th century and were often used at desks because they’re very comfortable and the arms can fit under the lid of a slant lid desk. The chair has a round seat box and is nice and sturdy with an x shaped stretcher below. The chair is made from the absolute best grade of imported Caribbean Mahogany that’s very dense and quite heavy. The chair has a curved crest rail with lamb tongue ends & was probably made in or around Boston. The arms have circular arm rests, and the crest rail is supported by 3 columnar stiles and 8 reed carved slats. The simplest designed corner chairs were made from local Timbers & usually had square seat boxes with simple turned legs. The most sophisticated examples were almost always made from Mahogany and had serpentine seat boxes with cabriolet legs & turned stretchers. This is a perplexing chair because it’s not an overly advanced design but is made from Mahogany and has a curved seat box. Furthermore, the majority of these had splats, often pierced, and the simpler examples didn’t have splats. I don’t think we’ve ever had a corner chair with reed carved slats like this and are excited to offer this exceptionally rare example to our clients around the world. If you have a Boston slant lid desk, this is the perfect companion piece. The chair is in wonderful condition with our only notes being minor surface wear & a couple of plugs that were installed when the upper portion of the crest rail was terminated. The chair measures 33” wide arm to arm x 22” deep x 31” tall. The chair has a 17 1/2” seat height and the height at the arms is 29 1/2” tall. less
