In … more Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic diminutive Queen Anne Mahogany tilt top kettle stand. In the early 18th century tea was still quite expensive and was mainly enjoyed in upper class homes. Serving tea was a hospitable way to welcome a guest and display your affluence. Tea tables became a popular piece of furniture to those who could afford them and were usually accompanied by other luxury items like tea caddies, imported porcelain cups, & sometimes kettle stands. The table has a dish top & a beautiful piece of Mahogany was used for the top. The table has an urn & ringlet turned pedestal with 3 finely formed cabriolet legs terminating with padded snake feet. We’ve handled similar tables from Pennsylvania & Maryland and believe the table was made in one of the Mid-Atlantic states. A couple of extra embellishments that we wanted to point out are the stepped knee where the legs meet the column, the Cupid’s bow carvings at the base of the pedestal, and the unusual iron spider underneath. Like many of these, the top has an old seasoning split that has been properly addressed & is stable and not at risk of expanding. The top has a few blemishes but nothing that would warrant a refinishing and disturbing the beautiful mellowed out Mahogany finish. When flipped up like in our gallery image the table measures 18 3/4” wide x 19” deep x 37 1/2” tall. When the top is locked down the table has a diameter of 18 3/4” and is 27 1/4” tall. less
