Shingo Honda was a talented, prolific artist in painting and sculpture. He was born in Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture (Northern Japan) in 1944. From 1964 to 1968, he studied at Tama Fine Art College in Tokyo. Shingo emerged in the activist Mono-ha movement in Japan in the 1960s. The movement, led by the Japanese and Korean artists artists Lee Ufan and Nobuo Sekine. He was part of a group that included Kishio Suga, Shingo Honda, Katsuhiko Narita and Katsuro Yoshida in painting, and Susumu Koshimizu in the sculpture department at Tama Art University (aka Tamabi) as well as Jiro Takamatsu and Lee Ufan, a Korean artist who is a close friend of Sekine.
From 1984 to 2006, he lived in the Art District near Little Tokyo in Downtown Los Angeles. During this period, he became a Zen Buddhist priest of Soto Mission.
Shingo Honda has made prints, paintings, sculpture, and public works. He has worked in wood, concrete, rope, bronze, stone, canvas, paper, pencil and paint.
Honda was a well-known artist and Zen Buddhism teacher whose work was featured in galleries in Japan, Hawaii and Los Angeles. Artcore Center in Little Tokyo (LA, California) hosted a number of exhibitions by Honda. He was also featured in 1994 at a biennial exhibition at Doizaki Gallery at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center. More recently, his worked was shown at Idspace in Hilo. He showed at LA Artcore galleries mostly in the 1990s and traveled on exchange shows to Japan and Thailand. His artwork and thoughtful lifestyle were connected to his devotion to Zen meditation. less
