Anya Fisher, born Anya Mikhailovna Lieberzon, (Russian-American, 1905-1992). She was born in Odessa, Czarist Russia, to an affluent artistic Jewish family; she fled Odessa during the Bolshevik Revolution immigrating to Minnesota. She moved to New York where she married a wealthy man named Lubetkin and explored the bohemian, artistic subculture of Greenwich Village during the 1930s. When their marriage ended, Anya moved out to San Francisco, where she earned her living writing art reviews for the San Francisco Chronicle. While there, she met and married Eddie Fisher, and moved to Los Angeles. and later moving to California, where she studied with the avant garde modernist WPA painter Rico Lebrun at the Jepson Art Institute. She graduated with an MFA in 1951 and took a job at LACMA to fund a year of study at the Académie Grand Chaumière in 1952.
After earning an MFA, she developed relationships with other artists like Betye Saar and Frederick Hammersley. She held an active exhibition schedule with solo exhibitions at the Pasadena Art Museum and the Long Beach Museum of Art, among others. She worked professionally in the arts as an artist, painter, poet, and teacher for most of her adult life leaving behind an extensive collection of paintings, drawings, and works in mixed media, and numerous sculpture works in ceramic. Her estate is handled by the Sullivan Goss Gallery in Santa Barbara California.
