Abstract Monoprint with wash
Ghost of Champs-Élysées (Paris, France)
Born in Philadelphia, Alfred Ortega studied painting and sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Ortega’s work is currently represented by the Atlantic Gallery, Nantucket; the Ligne Roset Gallery, New York; Millésimé, Philadelphia; and CSM Art, New Jersey. Ortega has exhibited at the Woodmere Museum and Knapp Gallery in Philadelphia. The artist’s work is represented in the permanent collection of the Pennsylvania State Museum and in private collections.
Noted for his bold use of color, Ortega’s paintings and oil prints emanate primal energy. His prominent, Abstract Expressionism, large canvases reveal a dynamic world populated with vibrant forms and figures barely contained within their frames. A master monoprint maker, Ortega’s vivid oil prints of abstracts, figures and portraits are animated by an unabashed freedom of form and color and a daring love of life. Abstract expressionism. Inspired by the great Latin American masters such as Antoni Tapies and Joan Miro this is a bold expressionist piece.
Artist's Statement
The painted works begin with mixing buckets of color, blacks and whites. Tools of application include brushes, broad knives and sheets of plastic to use the monotype process. Monotypes are created by the same unique process except the inks are applied to acrylic glass, then pressing rag paper and the glass together by hand. The work reaches resolution after composition and discovery. The sculpture is built on a metal armature wrapped in fabric dipped in plaster. The process and tools used are the same.
