A large sterling silver with interior gilding Kiddush cup, lidded goblet by RICHARD FISHMAN for EDITIONS JUDAICA. United States, c. 1970s. On solid round base with stylized stem that connects to a bowl shaped upper portion. The cover, decorated with a flower. Signed.
EXQUISITE KIDDUSH CUP— This attractive kiddush cup by sculptor Richard Fishman was commissioned by Temple EmanuEl of Providence, Rh.I. It has been made available in sterling by Editions Judaica, from Cambridge, Mass. The original is now in the Jewish Museum in New York. The edition is limited, each signed by the artist and serially numbered.
This is part of a 20th century renaissance of master craftsmen creating judaica. Artists such as Ludwig Wolpert, (Bauhaus trained and founder of the Tobe Pascher workshop) Zelig Segal, Ibram Lassaw, Chaim Gross, Moshe Zabari, Arie Ophir, Menahem Berman, Daniel Liebskind have all made ritual objects in a variety of forms.
Richard Fishman is a sculptor who earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1963 and continued his studies at Tulane University, graduating with an MFA in 1965. His work has been shown at such acclaimed institutions as The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the Jewish Museum in New York City, and the DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Museum of Art at the Rhode Island School of Design, Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston Public Library, Department of Prints and Drawings and the David Winton Bell Gallery, Brown University.
Fishman has had 29 one-person exhibitions, more than 50 group exhibitions and is a recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship.He was previously awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and is currently a Professor Emeritus of Visual Art and Director of the Creative Arts Council at Brown University.
