Fritzi Brod (1900–1952) was a Czech-born American artist. Her work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Gallery of Art, Washington the Art Institute of Chicago and the Whitney Museum of American Art. She was born Fritzi Schermer June 16, 1900 in Prague. Her mother was a minor painter and would take Fritzi to the art galleries and the centers of music over all Austria and Germany. She filled a whole sketch book from this inspiration. She studied at Lycee in Prague and Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna. After immigrating to the United States in 1924, she attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Brod established herself as an innovative textile designer, and her fabrics gained great reputation in the American fashion world. Her archives are held in the Smithsonian Archives of American Art in Washington, D.C.
In the mid-1930s, Brod created numerous works on paper, mostly woodcuts and lithographs. In most of her graphics she features women, the majority of whom were inspired by German Expressionism; only a few of them reflect a design approach. Although Brod’s graphics during the mid-1930s were mostly expressionistic,
she preferred to submit a woodcut that represented her decorative or design approach. Some of her work was inspired by Art Nouveau. Her oeuvre including lithograph and woodcut woodblock prints was published by Works Progress Administration (WPA), Federal Art Project, Chicago, 1935 - 1943. She was included in the American Block Print Calendar 1937 [Works Progress Administration’s Federal Arts Project] Milwaukee: Gutenberg Publishing Company, 1936. Contributing artists included: Wharton Esherick, Todros Geller, Peggy Bacon, William Zorach, Stuart Davis, Thomas Hart Benton, William Gropper, Carl Holty, Grant Wood, Gustave Baumann, Bernece Berkman, John Steuart Curry, Emil Ganso, Ernest Fiene, Jean Charlot, Birger Sandzen, Boris Artzybasheff, Rockwell Kent, Fritzi Brod and Nicolai Cikovsky. She was the author of "200 Motifs and Designs" (1945) and "Flowers in Nature and Design" (1946).
