Mattioli received his MD at … more These very rare almost 500 year-old woodblock engravings are by Pietro Andrea Mattioli, Italian, 1501-1577. Mattioli received his MD at the University of Padua in 1523. He practiced medicine in Siena, Rome, Trento and Gorizia and was the personal physician to Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria, and Maximillian II, Holy Roman Emperor. He died in Trento in 1577. A renowned botanist and physician, he was interested in all the sciences and was a prolific published author. These woodblock engravings are in excellent condition for their age and were hand-colored at a later date.

I purchased these in Florence several years ago. They come with a purposefully distressed cream color mat with gold trim. Giovanni Baccani whom I purchased them from, wanted the mat to have a "sand" like finish to them. less
