This beautiful hand-colored copper-plate engraving is from "Histoire Naturelle, generale et particuliere, avec la description du Cabinet du Roi" - … more This beautiful hand-colored copper-plate engraving is from "Histoire Naturelle, generale et particuliere, avec la description du Cabinet du Roi" - in English - Natural History, general and particular, with a description of the King's Cabinet. This was an encyclopedic collection containing 36 quarto (large) volumes written between 1749-1804. The Comte de Buffon initiated this undertaking and eight more volumes were added to the collection after his death. The books were printed in black ink. This engraving was hand-colored at a later date.

The engraver's name on the plate is Robert Benard, 1734-1785, French, who was born and died in Paris.

I purchased this engraving 15 years ago from Giovanni Baccani of The Blue Door in the Borgo Ognissanti in Florence. The plate come with a beautiful navy blue and gold on cream mat which Giovanni made.

Matted the piece is 20 x 15.75 inches. Un-matted the plate is 18 x 12.5 inches. less
