About the work: Victorian ceramic tiles represent an early attempt to provide mass-produced decoration for the popular market. During the nineteenth century the traditional art of tile making b ecame an industrial process and as such was an important adjunct to the changing styles of Victorian architecture and design.
Some of the ceramic tiles were hand-painted or made to a commissioned design, but the vast majority were produced by the large industrial potters such as Minton's and Maw's. From the encaustic floor tiles of the neo-Gothic buildings of the fifties and sixties to the use of decorative wall tiles in large schemes of architecture towards the end of the century, the manufacture of decorated tiles became one of the great 'art industries' of the period. Today many of the tiles described and illustrated in Victorian Ceramic Tiles may be 'picked up' quite inexpensively.
In Victorian Ceramic Tiles Julian Barnard, who also authored The Decorative Tradition, traces the growth of the tile industry, with development of production techniques, and describes the work of the pioneers in Britain and America. The wide variety of illustrations and the comprehensive section on collecting tiles make this book the standard reference book. less
