Background info:
Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré (6 January 1832 – 23 January 1883) was a French artist, as a printmaker, illustrator, painter, comics artist, caricaturist, and sculptor. He is best known for his prolific output of wood-engravings, especially those illustrating classic books, including 241 illustrating the Bible.
In all he created some 10,000 illustrations, the most important of which were "duplicated in electrotype shells that were printed ... on cylinder presses", allowing very large print runs as steel engravings, "hypnotizing the widest public ever captured by a major illustrator", and being published simultaneously in many countries. The drawings given to the block-cutters were often surprisingly sketch-like and free. Gustave Doré was a world famous 19th century illustrator. Although he illustrated over 200 books, some with more than 400 plates, he is primarily known for his illustrations to The Divine Comedy, particularly The Inferno, his illustrations to Don Quixote, Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven.
These art images include Doré's illustrations to The Divine Comedy, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Perrault's Fairy Tales, Don Quixote, Paradise Lost, Contes Drolatiques, Fables de La Fontaine, Tennyson's Elaine, and others.
Further Explanation:
The title is: Npaolo and Francesca. Drawn by Gustave Dore and engraved by Pannemaker. Published in 1866 as a New Edition.
It is called a "woodcut engraving". This distinguishes it from other types of engravings such as copper or steel. The publishing date is critical, because this is a new edition. This means the engraving is freshly printed in this new edition of 1866.
It probably is the most sought after image in this publication.
Don't forget that this engraving is taken directly off the engraved piece of wood. It is copied from the wood engraving cut by Pannemaker. It is an original engraving. Pannemaker used Dore's drawings so that the professional printer could produce woodcut copies from Pannemaker's piece of wood.
The engraving we are selling is a sharp, fresh copy.
This is not a print.
It is an engraving that was one of many that was copies off the wooden block.
