This book is 'Westward Hoboes' by Winifred Hawkridge Dixon, with photographs by Katherine Thaxter and Rollin Lester Dixon. The 375-page hardcover describes now Winifred and Katherine (Toby) traveled 14,000 miles cross-county in a Cadillac Eight. The journey happened at a time when very few roads in the U.S. had been paved. And, certainly the thought of two women driving alone to the Wild West might have given family second thoughts = but not for the authors. They drove from New York to New Orleans (and Antoines) and then to, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho,Colorado, Utah,N ew Mexico, Texas(and points in between).. There is no chronology, but since the book's First Edition was published in 1921 by Scribner's, I am guessing the trip was taken in the late 19teens. There are lot of photos and descriptions of Native Americans, along the way. The black-and-white photos also showcase some of the natural wonders they encountered, including Cave Dwellings in Santa Fe, The Grand Canyon, Rock formations in Pine, Arizona and much more. The book is in very good antique condition, with gilt decorations on the front cover. The pages are clean, bright and unmarked. This is an early 1923 printing, with no other printings listed. This historic book should be of interest to those collecting the American West, pioneering American women trail-blazers, Native Americans in the early 20th Century and more. It' been widely reprinted by others. But this original will be sent, carefully packed, with tracking.
