This tubular Modernist Coffee Table is believed to be designed and produced in the 1930s by Slezak Furniture Company in former Czechoslovakia as model ST44. At the time this radical Bauhaus aesthetics and visions for the new way of living were adopted by many leading furniture producers and architects and were popular with the general public. We can find similar versions of this round coffee table in catalogues of other producers of Modernist furniture based in Czechoslovakia like Gottwald, Mucke-Melder or Vichr to name a few. They all produced this table but with a different table top. Usually it was lacquered in a primary colour - following the Bauhaus manifesto or covered with a coloured opaxite glass. This piece doesn’t have a label of it’s producer but it was sourced from a family collection, together with a pair of chairs and is believed to be produced by the Slezak Company.
The thick round table top has got a a striking veneer pattern and the honey colour contrasts nicely with the ‘colder’ shiny frame of four tubular steel legs, which are connected with a steel ring near the bottom of the piece. It’s almost like the steel legs were effortlessly lifting the wooden top through the air. Each part is nicely balanced and work together to form a visual harmony. The flawless simplicity of the form and its volumes means that this piece is still perfectly compelling as when it was original designed and could be a great addition to any modern or more traditional interior.
The wooden part of the piece have been refurbished by our experienced restorer who specialises in Modernist furniture, and is in perfect vintage condition with some minor patina. The steel frame has been cleaned and polished and there is only minimum wear acquired over the years. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
issues arising from misattribution less
