A beautiful antique circa early 1920s solid nickel stock or sauce pot. Made by Joseph Heinrichs for the Club Royal, an exclusive little restaurant located in the former stables of one of Old New York’s most powerful families on E. 52nd St. right around the corner from the Gilded Age mansion that now houses Cartier on 5th Avenue. A wonderful piece of New York City restaurant history!
Club Royal opened in 1921, at a time when the old New York families considered regularly dining among strangers in a restaurant a fad for the “cafe set” and stuck mostly to private dinner parties in grand homes. When it opened the Club Royal was considered the most exclusive supper club New York had ever known (according to the Harper’s Bazaar January 1922 issue). The supper club was located in the former stables of Mrs. Ogden Goulet; the stables were transformed into a Spanish garden with absolutely no expense spared. The restoration of the stables and reception by New York society were covered breathlessly by magazines and newspapers worldwide. It coincided with a number of other exclusive restaurants in New York (Louis Sherry’s, The Plaza, The Ritz, the new Delmonico’s) that ushered in a new era in fine dining, where dinner parties at home were now considered stodgy and restaurants became the place to see and be seen. Some of the newspaper and magazine clippings still remain in archives, though they are few and far between. With your purchase of this piece I will include a few print outs to some of the articles I found while researching the Club Royal.
Joseph Heinrichs made and sold very high quality cookware through such well regarded retailers as Tiffany & Co, and directly to many of the finest restaurants and hotels from 1897-1937... In the past we have had Joseph Heinrichs pieces from the Waldorf Astoria, The Plaza, and a number of other fine restaurants and hotels.
In excellent condition for its age, no dents or damage, just the usual small marks and signs of use you would expect from old restaurant ware that’s about 100 years old. Freshly polished and ready to use! Marked as made by Jos. Heinrichs for the Club Royal.
