I was told by a reputable source that it is a Chinese portable/carrying scholars desk from the late 1800's.
It does have a wax seal.
Well constructed, great patina, & quite heavy.
The front is held in by 2 wooden pegs at the base & a lock at the top, but sadly there is no 'key'.
It has the push in holes/long fork kind of 'lock' used in Oriental cabinets & such.
Shelf, fixed, inside.
2 well made drawers which I was informed would hold ink etc.
Apparently the hardware is new.
Metal banded top corners.
24 3/4" high x 20 1/8" wide x 11 3/4" deep. less
