The elegant and rich design of these three pieces are by Anthony Freeman with his use of gold leaf. They include: large ashtray with a glossy spicy mustard brown color center, the small ashtray with glossy dark forest green and the bowl completely gold leafed. The bowl has a little area of the gold leaf cracking (see images). All pieces are signed Anthony, USA and their respective form number.
The Freeman – McFarlin Pottery of California was founded in 1927 by Gerald McFarlin and Maynard Anthony Freeman. The creative side of the business was handled by Freeman and McFarlin dealt with the business component. Items signed Anthony were created by Freeman, There were other designers in their payroll which also contributed to the success of the enterprise. A second pottery was established in San Marcos, CA in 1968. The Freeman McFarlin potteries were sold in 1972.
