This gorgeous beech chair has all the right curves. It makes a huge statement and it’s history is definitely interesting. Tagged by Chairmasters, a Bronx manufacturer, this chair was also showing in a catalog from expert bentwood chair maker, Thonet. This chair design was selected by Florida designer, James Mont, to customize in his famous renovation, a project known as ‘King Cole Penthouse’ which is well documented in a book published about the design. Although he took the basic chair and added gold gilt and bling, they are generally found with either the cane back or an upholstered back. His mix of traditional Asian design, glam and transitional really are amazing and this chair worked well. I have attached pics of his custom version of this chair and how it was used with a game table.
The restoration of this chair required me to remove the original compromised cane. I replaced with the same radio weave. It was a bit difficult to work with and the tight curve of the chair back made for a challenge. It’s not perfect but I am happy with it. I stained it a teak to match the original finish and added a poly coating to seal it up. Finish is otherwise original and has some minor signs of wear from age and use. Padding and foam is original and in great shape. Fabric and dust cover is new. I used a vintage linen ikat print by design decorator brand Brunschwig and Fils in cream, cobalt blue, orange, yellow and green. This should pop with many color themes! Label has been placed back on underneath. If you do not like my fabric choice, it’s an easy redo!
