At first glance this is a quintessential Mid-century modern lamp with great texture & glazing, quality brass parts, then bam! The artist stamped their hand prints on the sides of the base as if having too much fun with the glazing or she/he was being innovative or simply grabbed it out of frustration? Perhaps it's supposed to look like the lamp is holding it's belly but it kinda reminds us of an embrace just like when we were in junior high and a friend pretended to be making out with someone by wrapping their arms around their selves. Fun times!
Well, we will never know what the Artist's true intention was but it is certainly a fun conversation piece that could be used in a children's bedroom or playroom to inspire creativity. The body/base is a hollow ceramic stoneware vessel with an open bottom closed off with a felt cloth. The brass hardware is actually a brushed brass that appears to be sealed with a clear coat of lacquer possibly. less
