Mary is represented according to the classic iconography, while he holds Jesus in his arms.
Jesus and the Madonna places both in the foreground, hold a lily in hand:
In his Vallis Liliorum, the German mystical Tommaso da Kempis cites the Canticle of Canticles: "I am the flower and the lily of the validated"; “This is the word with which Christ turns to the Holy Church in general, and more especially to each pitiful soul. In fact, Christ is the beautiful bridegroom of the Catholic Church [\.], the flower of all virtues, the lily of the validations. [\.] Those who therefore want to serve Christ and pleasure to the heavenly groom, get to undress of his vices, to collect the lilies of virtue ".
Jacopone da Todi, in The cry of the Madonna de la Passione del Son Jesù Cristo, makes Mary say: “O Son, Son, Son! / Son, Amoroso Giglio, / Son, who gives advice / to the corner of my anguished? ".
"If the combination of roses and lilies in religious depictions often underline the mystical bond between mother and son", writes Piccolo Paci, "where the presence of the Iris is emphasized, perhaps associated with another flower, such as Aquilegia ad Example, we want to highlight the sovereignty and the painful and necessary fate of the Savior ".
To give depth to the entire composition is the open window behind the figures.
The splendid invoice and the refined color, evidently of the highest level, suggest the attribution to a great talent operating in Lombardy in the second half of the eighteenth century.
