A very rare pair of 1925-1930 French art deco wall sconces. Nickel plated solid brass or bronze mounts hold beautiful slip shades in patinated clear frosted molded-pressed glass.
Simonet started in the 19th century as a company specialized in gilt bronze decorations for furniture candlesticks gas lamps, etc. During the first world war Cellier et Simonet were running their business as good as was possible during wartime. In 1919 the company revived and the brothers Albert and Henry together with help of their mother re-opened the workshops and store of their father downtown Paris, 60 rue des Archives. The company finally closed its door in 1970. During the art deco era the sculptor and designer Henri Dieupart (1888-1980) created numerous vases as well as some lampshades and mounts, edited by Simonet freres. The glass vases and shades were produced by the Cristallerie Choisy-le-Roi. The rare art deco lamps by Simonet frères are nowadays sought-after items that make high prices at auction houses. Similar to Genet & Michon, Lalique, Brandt, Ruhlmann.
At the back the mounts are signed Simonet frères. This wonderful model shade is never signed. It is extremely rare. I only saw a chandelier with six of these shades once. The sconces I never saw before. A small chandelier can be seen in an advertisement I found in an old 1928 designers magazine.
The sconces are 13,4 cm high (5-9/32") 15 cm wide (5,9") and 18,5 cm deep (7-9/32 inches). They are in very good condition. I have re-nickeled and patinated the mounts. The usual
small chips and hairlines common for 100 y/o shades. See the last two pictures. Nothing disturbing or distracting. The fixtures come rewired with American candelabra base sockets.
