Incredibly detailed embroidered work of an Asian landscape, likely Japan, in an equally elaborate carved wood frame. Circa 1940s-1950s. The embroidery captures a tranquil scene with pine trees, an arched Oriental bridge over a stream, and a pagoda structure with a tall snow capped mountain in the background. The artist has signed the work with a cartouche character at lower right, also done in thread! Many, many stitches are used to create this textile, appears to be silk thread with metallic gold thread interspersed for highlights.
Main colors are ivory or pearl, shades of gray, dark green and light sage green, shades of soft reds such as salmon and russet, light pink, and black.
The piece is matted with a unique patterned mat that mimics woodgrain or cork. The carved frame is a work of art in itself featuring a bat spread across the top rail and other traditional Asian scroll patterns signifying water and clouds. We note the frame is a unique slide fitting we haven't seen before. Some age shrinkage to the wood frame in spots, not affecting the overall presence of the piece. There is a small bit of paper that got trapped under the glass - it can be seen in the top left at the base of the mountain, which we have chosen to leave as part of the history of the piece, could be removed if desired. Ready to hang. less
