The front surface is polished, highlighting the white quartz, and the interior is full of large and small purple amethyst crystal points, as well as some white calcite crystal inclusions. Prized by many for its healing properties, amethyst is also considered helpful for meditation and feng shui - and a large specimen such as this makes a striking piece of art.

Amethyst cathedrals such as this formed millions of years ago, inside air pockets in basalt, from ancient lava streams. Their outer layers are basalt, with layers of green celadonite, agate, white quartz, and amethyst. After mining, the outside is coated in cement to protect the crystal structure and provide a stable base for display; this is then painted black so as to better offset the brilliant crystals.
