Although the signature on this piece appears to be very much authentic, the style and medium is otherwise quite a departure for prolific 20th century artist Irving Amen. The vibrant colors and dynamic expressive shapes convey energy, strength, excitement.
Framed in brass, it is mounted between clear panels in front and back, allowing the wall color behind to show through and compliment the artwork itself.
Born in 1918 in New York City, by age fourteen Amen had won a scholarship to the Pratt Institute, where he emulated Michelangelo's masterpieces and spent years perfecting his own unique style. After serving in World War 2, he had his first exhibition at the New School for Social Research in New York and his second at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington in 1949. His travels throughout Israel, Greece and Turkey led to a retrospective at the Artists House in Jerusalem in 1960.
Besides practicing his art, Amen also taught classes in sculptor and printmaking at such schools as the Pratt Institute and at Notre Dame University.
Commissions include a Peace Medal in honor of the Vietnam War and 12 stained glass windows for the Agudas Achim Synagogue in Ohio.
In 2011 Irving Amen died age 93 in Coconut Creek, Florida. He is listed in Mantle Fielding Dictionary of American Painters, Sculptors and Engravers and the Dictionary of Contemporary American Artists by Paul Cummings.
