This painting depicts a nun in sunlit courtyard. There is a large arch and some stairs in the foreground. I do not know the location; it appears European. The painting I dated 1969. Fleurbaaij had settled back in the Netherlands by that time. It is likely the painting could be somewhere in the Netherlands. Perhaps the architecture is familiar to a viewer. The painting is signed and dated (69) in the lower left. The painting is in good condition. The frame is in fair/poor condition with numerous small chips and two small holes on the lower bar in the linen mat. Please see pictures.
Hendrik Fleurbaaij was born in Vlissingen on 29 June 1896 and died in 1975. Fleurbaaij was a captain of large ocean-going vessels, and an amateur painter. He lived and worked in Vlissingen, Schiedam and Surabaya (Ned. Indie). In his later years, he moved to Apeldoorn, The Netherlands and was there through 1959. Then, I believe, he lived in Valkenisse
