Description: Offered here is a unique, piece of Folk Art. The circa 1880s Papier Mache Plate/Charger is hand painted in oil … more Offered here is a unique, piece of Folk Art. The circa 1880s Papier Mache Plate/Charger is hand painted in oil and measures 12 inches in diameter with a placid scene depicting a man in a row boat navigating through some branches into a quiet cove. The taupe and sepia tones are quite pleasing to one’s eye with a tint of blue sky and water around the top and bottom. Papier Mache is made from crushed and mashed up paper and paste. Items were popular during the Georgian/Victorian eras (1720-1900), but was being made much earlier in the East, such as China and Tibet. The Charger/Plate is in good to excellent age-related condition with slight wear around the perimeter of the plate. Also, an earlier owner taped a metal hanger to the back. I can say for certain, that these types of Chargers/Plates did not come with hangers on the back. They were meant to be either displayed in a cabinet, or on a plate rack or stand. They adapt very well to framing. There is writing on the back in script. It looks either like Farm or Germ and then WV/41. This is a lovely outdoorsman painting and would make a treasured gift for the avid sportsman. less
