This Clyfford Still rare vintage 1960 Abstract Expressionist custom framed Mid Century Modern fine art lithograph print " 1957-D-No.1 ", is an incredibly special and unique piece to add to your collection.
The lithograph print is published by Shorewood Publishers Inc., printed in The United States in 1960 in an unnumbered limited edition. It features an artwork image originally created by Clyfford Still in 1957 titled " 1957-D-No.1 ", Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, New York, gift of Seymour H. Knox.
Clyfford Still ( 1904 - 1980 ) was among the first generation of Abstract Expressionists who developed a new powerful approach to painting immediately following World War II. His contemporaries included Franz Kline, Willem De Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Described by many as the most anti-traditional of the Abstract Expressionists. The work is credited with laying the groundwork for the movement. Artworks by Still are included in the collections of many of the most prestigious museums.
Lithographs issued in the 1960's by Shorewood Publishing represent the gold standard of 20th Century American fine art printing. These lithographs were painstakingly produced to match the colorimetry of the originals, with the most accurate possible detail and subtlety. Paper and inks were carefully chosen for the most felicitous effect.
Dramatic in its scale and sharp contrasting colors, " 1957-D-No.1 " exemplifies Clyfford Still's ability to create visually complex yet balanced compositions, each jagged jolt of yellow seamlessly interconnects with the dense black. The work's paradox lies in the way that the opposition between color and black creates an energetic tension between advancing and receding space.
" 1957-D-No.1 " is one of the paintings that entered the museum's collection in the late 1950's. Gordon M. Smith, then the museum's director, and Seymour H. Knox Jr., worked hard to win Still's trust and finally convinced him of their sincere interest in his work. After Smith invited Still to organize his own large-scale survey. the artist's first, at the museum in 1959, Still donated thirty-one paintings to The Albright-Knox in 1964.
