I also feel the hardware used in the hinging of the desk lid has also been replaced at some point over the 200+ years. Additionally, there is one spot on the lower case work area of the side where a small spot of veneer was not replaced. The marks on the surface are indicative of a piece of this age. less

For those with an eye and love for antiques and an interest in possible provenance, this extraordinary Kentucky-made women's writing desk should peak your interest. It is said that this writing desk was created for the first, first lady of Kentucky, Susannah Hart Shelby, wife of Isaac Shelby, Kentucky's first governor. There is no paperwork to prove this as fact, other than the word of the family that previously owned this desk.
Regardless, this piece speaks loudly of it's place in time with it's construction. From hand-chiseled lock sets and dove tail joints constructing the drawers and the upper and lower cabinet body to the hand-turned posts supporting the upper portion of the desk, this piece was in existence during the 18th century! And, because there are no others exactly like this piece, it was most likely designed as a unique piece. The fact that the inlay work was meticulously repaired over the centuries, it is likely that this piece held great importance during those years. The inlay repair is an art piece in and of itself in the how it takes on a patchwork effect in wood.
The size of this desk makes it a perfect piece for any room or hall where such a piece would gather attention!
