This is a very unusual version of a mid-1800’s cabbage kraut cutter/shredder. Originally, the cutter would have been placed over a large crock when in use. The cutter is made of pine and the "cutting box" slides along tracks (and is fully removable if desired). Three original steel cutting blades are shown in center of the table surface. The cutting box would have held a head of cabbage and been slid across the blades similar to a modern day mandolin, to shred large quantities of cabbage for use in making sauerkraut; the box itself measures 10.5"W x 9.75"D. All original wear and patina from natural use and age remain. Marks and wood splits are what make authentic primitive antiques so special and charming and this piece is a sensational historical object that will serve as a console table in a modern home to display a few of the most special objects.
