NOTE on the material oil pastel: John Elliot first used oil pastel while on movie sets in the 1960s. As a trained artist in painting academies in Europe, he would sketch the actors during the many "wait times" on the set. He discovered oil pastels from Picasso's use of them which were then marketed as a superior hobby crayon type art material. They were NOT chalky and dusty and were relatively damage-proof as long as the supporting paper wasn't damaged. He subsequently worked with art materials manufacturers to develop a professional quality oil pastel - non-toxic, color fast, consistent quality control sets of colors. A combination of pure ground pigment, a minute quantity of wax and mineral or other oil enabled not only direct use of the pastel sticks but also spreading the pigment with a solvent laden brush for wash and background effects. Like traditional oil paints, oil pastel could also support scratch-details.
