Meredew Ltd, is a little -known British furniture maker, and was a medium -sized manufacturer in the 60s and 70s. They were located in Literworth Garden City in Hertfordshire. Started in London, Frederick took hard, who was the owner, in 1914 about 50 families to the new city of Letchworth. In 1938, 177 people were employed. Sometime in the 1950s (probably around 1955/57) they employed their first staff designer, a German emigrant named Alphons Loebenstein (then 57 years old) who persuaded the company to follow a route that was comparable to that of competitor G Plan . And with success! Between 1950 and 1965, sales increased by factor 40. The workforce grew steadily in the same period from 150 to around 1500. This was the highlight of the British mid -century furniture production, with small local companies that closed while larger companies expanded. People were still a lot smaller than manufacturer G plan, at the time the most important British makers of modern furniture. On the basis of remaining catalogs, the suspicion travels that they were of similar size such as McINTOSH and a little larger than manufacturer White + Newton. It is special that we rarely come across Meredew furniture today, in contrast to McINTOSH furniture, a factory that even employed far fewer people. There is a suspicion that many unbranded products have been produced for large retailers where people themselves stuck a logo on. Meredew marked furniture is therefore very rare today and scarce, but this cool chest of drawers is such a rare and typical English copy. We neatly see the mark in 1 drawer, and the whole is timeless and functionally designed and made with a great eye for detail and English craftsmanship. There are 3 drawers with so -called blind handles. Everything is executed in a beautiful color veneer. The whole stands on an elegant chassis with beautiful legs. Although more than 60 years old, the furniture is in a nice vintage state without very major damage to the visual edges, the traces of use and discolorations are in line with a piece of furniture of this age and not very disturbing in our eyes. Height: 73.7 cm Width: 76 cm Depth: 45.7 cm less
