She also had one year at Cooper Union in New York and one summer in Fontainbleau, France with Jacques Villon as critic. She worked as promotional art director for television and radio stations in Washington and New York. Since coming to Florida in 1967, she has devoted her time to painting. She won the Akston Award for best in show at the Norton Gallery in 1973 and exhibited at the Boca Museum of Art and had a solo exhibition at the Brevard Museum of Art in 2007. Hangen has been a partner in two Palm Beach galleries for 20 years. She joined the Florida Artists Group in 1977, has been President twice and was the Area II chair.
Her abstract acrylic paintings are designed to show the interaction of color by using shaded waves of lines over a construction of half circles and straight lines to combine the organic and geometric.
