- Antique lacquer table imported from China in the 18th century. Similar tables are listed for sale as sewing tables. The … more Antique lacquer table imported from China in the 18th century. Similar tables are listed for sale as sewing tables. The removable tray within is lined in pale blue velvet and trim that could have been added at a later date. The finish shows wear appropriate with age but close inspection reveals a complex and interesting portrayal of many people in ethnic dress at a table, flowers and architecture. It is possible item was used as a writing desk. Evidence of some sort of repair on top surface does not interrupt the image. Decorated on the back with teacher and student images. This is a very interesting piece that is very old and fragile. The hand painting is ornate and it is heavily ornamented. One foot has tip of toe missing and gold leaf is worn thin. For the history enthusiast, particularly of Asian culture, this is a mystery waiting to be solved. less
