These boxes were used to celebrate the birth of a child. Made of cardboard, metal and glass. The lid was painted on the reverse of the glass starting with the eyes, mouth etc... and finishing with the background. A reverse way of painting. The boxes were filled with "dragees" or almond covered in sugar and either colored blue or pink depending on the new born sex. Also included were small silver candy.

This box contains a note "This box was given to my great-great grand mother Peters in 1835, it is a box painted in the "Fixee" method being painted on glass in reverse where details are painted first and background last." less
