Provenance: The Artist | Allan Stone Gallery, New York
Exhibited: Gallery Group Show, 17 September - 15 October 1994, Allan Stone Gallery, New York (one work) | Philip Sherrod: Paintings, 12 December 1996 - 31 January 1997, Allan Stone Gallery, New York (one work) and then to me via auction.
Sherrod's pulsating style has been linked to Vincent Van Gogh and Chaim Soutine, artists who pioneered the personalized, expressive brushstroke. Sherrod’s lively and unfiltered psychic outpourings give the viewer direct access to the eyes through which Sherrod sees the world we inhabit.
Sherrod was born in 1935 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. He received a BA in painting in 1959 from the Oklahoma State University and attended the Art Students League in the early 1960s. He is the recipient of several awards including a National Endowment for the Arts Grant in 1982 and a Pollock-Krasner Grant in 1989. His works are held in the collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C., the Museum of the City of New York, the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, Providence, among others. less
