The vase is large in scale and incised with Victoria Littlejohn and is circa 1960. The base of the vase is unglazed with a hand thrown shaft that tapers upward and flares out to form a glazed concave rim. The unglazed surface of the vase is beautifully thrown and classically proportioned. The contrast between the glazed and unglazed portions of the vase serves to reinforce the classical form of the columnar shaft as it rises up and flares out to form the more refined and glazed upper portion of the vase reminiscent of a column in classical architecture with the shaft and capital. Of particular note is that there is a sweeping vertical band of color that almost appears as a shadow. This subtle application of color further accentuates the classic proportions of this exquisite vessel.
This is the work of a truly accomplished artist.
Victoria Littlejohn is a California native, who received her BFA and MFA from USC, where she studied with F. Carleton Ball and Susan H. Petersen. She went on to study with Marguerite Wildenhain and Peter Voulkos, before working from 1962 - 1964 as a studio assistant for Tom McMillin. For over 35 years she worked as an independent artist with studios in El Segundo, Laguna Beach, and Big Bear, California. She has also collaborated with Raul Coronel. In 2012, Victoria Littlejohn was an artist-in-residence at the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts.
Exhibited at the Nationals in 1960.
