The origin of this art is approximately 700 to 800 years old. It is practiced mainly by the women of the communities of this tribal region. Over the years the art evolved from decorating the homes of this region to art work on wood. Some work done on wood is available, but not of the Quality and Craftsmanship displayed on this very large wooden frame.
The dough for the mud art is made of special clay found in the lakes and ponds of the region. Every village has its own technique for making the mixture; sometimes marble dust is also added. The artisans of this craft achieved great expertise in this art form and it is found in palaces and forts of the region. Its popularity grew to other regions of India.
A very large frame and a rare find. The mud work art lasts for decades without deteriorating. A valuable possession that will add an old world grace to any home.
The wood of the frame shows signs of use consistent to the age of the piece. The wood is cracked in two places visible from the front. The back of the frame also shows signs of use and age. The wood is too old to identify.
There is some scuffing of the mud artwork which has been highlighted in the photographs. A sealant has been applied to the scuffed mud work to prevent further damage. It has been professionally cleaned, no alteration has been done, and it retains its original color. Condition is consistent with age. less
