Description: Dramatic large scale baluster form (20 3/4" tall) Meiji Period Japanese Imari Porcelain Jar.
The central portion of the body … more Dramatic large scale baluster form (20 3/4" tall) Meiji Period Japanese Imari Porcelain Jar.
The central portion of the body is hand painted in rich, colorful enamels with multiple scenes painted against white glaze background & presented in a wonderful artistic manner.
On the sides are scenes of a phoenix standing alongside a marshland. On the front and back are scenes as if painted on folding screens. The scene on the front portrays a group of Japanese men having tea on a veranda overlooking a lake with a mountain landscape. The scene on the back portrays large potted Japanese Bonsai trees. The intervening areas are filled with extremely intricate designs painted in red & gold. The top and base have a very striking blue and white lappet border and flower design. The cover is painted in a similar manner and topped with a white and gold foo lion finial.
Hallmarked on the base in red with a hand painted artist symbol as shown.
19th Century.
Very good overall condition. The piece has been taken very good care of and is well preserved. Some barely noticeable glaze craquelure noted in one area - see photograph. This is a result of the original firing process. It is strictly in the glaze and does not go through the body.
A striking peice of fine antique Japanese porcelain.
