This is just a great original piece. This is also another piece that I debated keeping as this was a book my children liked when they were younger. However, I think it would be better in a collection that has a higher appreciation of the work. For those not familiar with the artist I included her biography below. This is a study for illustration published in Little Love Song by Richard Kennedy (New York: Knopf, distributed by Random House, 1992). Watercolor, gouache, and ink on thin board. measuring 6x6 inches, on 10 1/4x9 1/2-inch sheet. Titled "Study for 'Little Love Song'" and signed "Petra Mathers" in pencil in lower right image. Only part of this illustration was used for the actual image in the book but the it is the main parts including the peanut shell house and the laundry line coming off of it. Really it is just the surrounding and background was changed. Really a great little charming original illustration. Original copy of the book accompanies the illustration. Do your own research. Her work virtually never comes to market.
For those not familiar with the artist, her biography from Simon & Schuster website reads: "Petra Mathers is the author and illustrator of many children’s books, including her beloved Lottie series. Lottie’s New Beach Towel was Book of the Year for Parenting Magazine, and Lottie’s New Friend was named a New York Times Best Illustrated Book and won the Silver Medal from the New York Society of Illustrators. She lives in Astoria, Oregon." less
