This Really is a Great Looking - Very Rare & Unusual Antique Continental Coin Silver Doctors - Physicians Medicine Spoon. Circa Late 19th Century. This Spoon Comes from a Time Past When Quite Commonly Doctors Actually Stocked and Administered Medications on House Calls Etc. The Figurative Handle - "Caduceus" is the Traditional Symbol of Hermes and Features Two Snakes Winding around a Winged Staff. It is Often Used as a Symbol of Medicine, Especially in the United States. The snake figure was associated with Asclepios, the ancient Greek God of medicine, and possessed benevolent properties. It was believed to be able to cure a patient or a wounded person just by touch. The snake is also connected with pharmacology and antisepsis, as snakes possess an antivenom against their own poison. This Fine Quality Silver Spoon is Completely Hand Made. It has Wonderful Detail in the Figurative Snakes, Wings Features Etc. It has No Maker Mark but I am Quite Sure that it is Continental European in Origin. It Does have a 800 Mark that Denotes its Silver Content. It is in Excellent Condition - Displays Beautifully. It is Lightly Tarnished. It has a Substantial Solid Silver Weight of 64.65 Grams - 2.079 Troy Ounces.
It Measures Overall 3/4 inch Tall x 7 1/4 Inches Long.
The Bowl is 1 13/16 inches Wide - Handle ( Wings ) are 1 1/2 inches Wide.

Most of the Continental European Silver Makers used and still do use Various Grades of Coin Silver - Typically 800, 825, 830, 833, 835, 875 & 900 Grades. This Piece Being Made Out of 800 Grade would have a 800/1000 Silver Content. Sterling Silver has a slightly higher 92.5% Silver Content - that being 925/1000 Silver Content.
