These lovelies belonged to my mom. She had a 30-piece dinnerware set that I have since sold. We recently relocated from Kansas, and as I continue unpacking, I found these laggards in a box. Well known in their day for their underglaze decoration and colorful patterns, Southern Potteries underglaze technique made the patterns more durable and the fact that each piece was hand-painted meant that no two pieces were exactly alike. The reason for stating two maker names, Southern Potteries and Canonsburg, has to do with timing. The pattern, Stanhome Ivy, was made exclusively in 1947 for Stanley Home Products by Southern Potteries, which closed its doors in 1957. After closing, a number of Southern Potteries painters went to Cannonsburg and Stetson potteries to complete orders existing at the time the company closed its doors. This accounts for the similarities often seen in the finished products of the all three potteries. The saucers were made in 1957 and do show the Cannonsburg name underneath, as they were finished by Canonsburg from orders placed with Southern Potteries. The cups were made by Blue Ridge Southern Potteries sometime in the late 1940s and are unmarked, which is not uncommon. All six are in excellent condition with minimal wear. Each saucer measures 6½” x ½” D/H; cups measure 3¾” x 2”; capacity 8 oz. apiece; together the set weighs 2 lbs. 14 oz.; crafted from hand painted bisque china; plate shape “Skyline”; color/motif consist of ivy leaves and berries on off white background. A fabulous addition to an existing set, if you are a Stanhome Ivy collector, or the perfect gift for someone who is.
