The work shows a double portrait of Van Dyck and Rubens, two of the most important Flemish painters in the first half of the 17th century.
On the left side of the canvas is Anton van Dyck (1599-1641) in a portrait of his youth. The brightness of his eyes stands out, as well as the realism captured in the folds of his clothes; his pirated side-facing and the vivacity of his pose. Van Dyck served as an assistant in the workshop of Rubens, twenty years his senior. He thus became his most advanced pupil, following his master's European artistic training (London, Italy\. returning to his hometown of Antwerp).

On the right side is an exquisite portrait of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), in an adult age, with a long beard and a serene, mature and calm look. Rubens was born in Antwerp, formed by the European environment of the late sixteenth - early seventeenth century.

The pictorial quality of the work stands out for the psychological capture of the characters and the perfect realism.
It can be interpreted as a portrait of two of the greatest artists of the 17th century Flemish panorama in the history of art.
The disciple looks towards the horizon, towards the future and modernity, while the master, in an adult age, stares at the viewer, serious and emphatic. less
