This French treasure, has been for years out of sight in our attic storage. Now we need to let it go. Years ago, a conversation was about a child, riding around in a huge attic in an old house in Boston. That's where they played because of the winter snow. My grandmother use to play with her three brothers and someone pulled the tail of her toy horse and now we find it in this condition, 1/2 in and 1/2 out (but still attached), it's been like this for many years. It was never fixed because there was such an outbreak of wailing and squalling, (grandmother), that it was put away and not seen for many years. it has now landed in my lap, and I am 72 and retired. Many things came from my father's estate after he died, this being one, which was uncovered during inventory and because of litigious reasons. It's now being offered for sale. Rumors are, it was a gift to a spoiled little girl with too many jealous big brothers around the turn of the century (1900).
Research: It seems in around 1838-39, this rare riding toy horse was seen in etchings done in Switzerland, from the estate of Napoleon the III,s mother, (Hortense de Beauharnais). Her son, Louis Bonaparte, was in the etching with the toy horse. These etchings are the oldest known style of this toy horse tricycle that was found. From these copies, handmade three-dimensional toy horse tricycles were made for the wealthy children in France. How this horse got to Boston many years ago is only a guess, rumors is from a beloved father whose business travels took him yearly to Europe.
This beloved treasure is offered for sale, of course with 1/2 of its tail out, but attached.

(2) back wheels are 15 1/2" diameter, metal wheels and spokes with wood overlay.
Mane is made of hand carved metal.
This horse, shows a genuine tooled leather saddle.
Wheels and all the mechanisms are in working order.
The body seems to be of wood, that has an authentic patina. There are a few discolorations due to age. The attached tail, is authentic horse hair, and as mentioned earlier, is 1/2 in and 1/2 out of the horse, but is attached. less
