A Chola style bronze molded through the cire-perdue or lost wax process, depicting one of the most revered of all Hindu deities, Vishnu, in a impressive dignified, and rare image.
With exceedingly wide shoulders and the exceedingly narrow torso characteristic of sculptures from the western region of Tamil Nadu, Vishnu stands in a royal position, one front hand lowered in the gesture of vyakhyanamudra, which indicates the teaching attitude or the coming together of the Jivatma (individual soul) and parramatta (soul infinite). The other hand hanging below the waist and resting on a standing mace. Two upper arms in katakamukha holding Vishnu’s signature accessories of the shanku and chakra.
In lush detailing with rich ornamentation that integrated the fleshly figures, the countenance of Vishnu is lucid with fortitude.
The solid brass metal captured the sinuous strength and dynamism of Vishnu in forms and spirit, beautifully illustrated the benevolent divine grace in a timeless symbol.
Only one of these statues is ever made
