The hardcover art book with dust jacket is published by Harry N. Abrams Inc. Publishers New York, printed and bound in Japan in 1955, in association with W. Kohlhammer, Stuttgart, sho also planned and produced the book. The illustration plates are the work of engravers Haufler & Wiest, E. Schreiber, and G. Kramer, all of Stuttgart, and Meisenbach-Riffarth, Berlin. Authored by Wilhelm Boeck and Jaime Sabartes, Milton S. Fox, editor.
Pablo Picasso ( 1881 - 1973 ) was a Spanish born painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, poet and playwright who spent most of his life in France. He is regarded as one of the most important and influential artists of The Twentieth Century. Exceptionally prolific throughout the course of his long life, Picasso achieved universal renown and immense fortune for his revolutionary artistic accomplishments, and became one of the most well known figures in 20th Century Art.
With the publication of this Picasso book, no other single volume had succeeded in showing and telling so much about him and his work. In recognition of the unique character of this landmark monograph, Picasso himself collaborated in the production. He selected the painting which is produced on the dust jacket, and he created the designs for the cover boards exclusively for the purpose of this book in July 1955, making the volume a collector's item.
The texts present the artist's life and work in great detail. Wilhelm Boeck, one of Germany's leading experts on Modern Art, traces the development of Picasso's career with brilliant perceptive analyses, showing the bewildering variety of the oeuvre of the many sided genius. Jamie Sabartes an intimate of Picasso's since his youth, contributes some rare and extremely revealing sides of the artist. Together with these texts, and the illustrations which number more than 600 - including line cuts, halftones, and the 40 hand tipped lithograph color plates, the book is truly a monument to a great artistic personality. The importance of the book is further enhanced by extensive catalogues and indexes.
