"In a Manner of Speaking" is a large format, bright, moody, abstract expressionist oil painting by Hudson Valley, New York contemporary artist, Monica Shulman. Punctuating her rhythmic, gestural marks and paint drips with varying bold shades of indigo, pink, magenta, purple, blue, green, and white, Monica creates a vivid painting that will add joy and dimension to any space. This painting is sculptural and layered and the wide range of blue, red, yellow and pink colors, values and shades is mesmerizing and energizing. The varied texture, paint drips and bold brushwork makes the eye travel around the painting.
This painting is part of a larger series of works that explores that dynamic tension with color and movement. Monica's gestures and marks create connection and energy, and her intuitive mark-making reflect her spirit and the humanness of her experiences.
Monica has been featured in various publications including The Washington Post, Popular Photography, Westchester Magazine, Create Magazine and the Huffington Post. In 2019, the Director of PULSE Art Fair in Miami invited Monica to participate in the “Next Generation” exhibit to celebrate the fair’s 15th anniversary. She was named "Best Artist" in Westchester by Westchester Magazine in 2019. Her work has been shown at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City, the National Association of Women Artists, Photo LA, Art Market Hamptons, PULSE Art Fair, and the New York Mercantile Exchange, among others. less
